Looking for alternative things to do in Broome? Riding a camel along Cable Beach at sunset is all well and good, but if you want to discover all there is to experience in this coastal paradise, you’ll need to leave the camels behind. Broome is located on a stunning peninsula stretching out into the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean and is blessed with near constant sunny skies and an enviable position just outside the Kimberly region. The natural beauty of this northern part of Western Australia is second to none and there is much more to Broome than just camels and beaches (though they’re a pretty good combo). Check out the best of the rest and make the most of your time in beautiful Broome.

Go Kayaking

If you can’t quite tear yourself away from those sparkling blue waters, sign up to a guided kayak tour and see what wildlife you can spot from the comfort of your seat. The marine life here is top class with manta rays, dolphins and even sea turtles easy to spot year round. You might even be lucky enough to spy a whale during their annual migration.

Willie Creek Pearl Farm

The staff at Willie Creek are experts in entertaining and informative tours telling all there is to know about how pearls are cultured and produced and turned into the necklaces and bracelets where we normally find them. The farm has won numerous awards and is located on a beautiful patch of coastline just north of Broome and a trip here is part local history, part pearls and part sightseeing. You may even spot one of the resident crocodiles during a tour. Alternative Things to do in Broome today.

An Outdoor Cinema Experience to Remember

The Sun Pictures outdoor cinema is the oldest of its kind in Australia, with screenings taking place since 1916. The entrance to the cinema is an exhibition in itself with tonnes of old film memorabilia like projectors and actual film harking back to its pre-digital age. These days you can expect multiple screenings per night (unusual for an outdoor cinema) and great acoustics making for a top cinematic experience under the stars

Fall for Horizontal Falls

Broome is well known as the gateway to the Kimberley region, which isn’t short on natural wonders. Alternative Things to do in Broome. The nearest of which is Horizontal Falls, or the “Horries”, a remarkable natural phenomenon where water is pushed between a narrow gap between two huge red rock gorges, making it look just like a waterfall, except – you guessed it – horizontal. If you’ve got the nerve, hop on a jet boat and zoom between the two at top speed. Or, if you prefer something a little less terrifying, view the falls from above on one of the many seaplane tours available.

Step in the Footsteps of Dinosaurs

Broome’s coastline is dotted with perfectly preserved dino footprints dating back 130 million years. Only discovered by scientists back in 2011, the prints range in size from a mere 20 cm to a huge 1.5m and you can spot them from Roebuck Bay all the way up to Cape Leveque, that’s a whopping 200km. Stick to the coastline around Broome and find your own piece of ancient history.
