The reef is less than 0.5 kilometres (0.31 mi) offshore in some areas, such as Coral Bay. In 2006, researchers from the Australian Institute of Marine Science discovered gardens of sponges in the marine park’s deeper waters that are thought to be species completely new to science.

Coral Bay and Exmouth are “Nature Lovers’ Paradise!” The two areas are located on what is today called the Ningaloo Marine Park. It’s one of the few spots on the planet where you can get up and personal with the world’s largest fish, the whale shark. From March to July, these gentle filter-feeding giants can be spotted off the coast.

Coral Bay is as beautiful as its name suggests. You’re only a few feet away from the world’s largest fringing reef, the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef, on white-sand beaches. Dive, snorkel, or fish in brilliant turquoise waters and get up and personal with aquatic life.

Step off the beach at Exmouth, swim a few metres through the clearest turquoise water on the planet, and you’ll be drifting over the world’s largest fringing reef, the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef.

Dive in Ningaloo Reef & Coral Bay with Whale Sharks

Our whale shark tours provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for individuals. These are gentle and placid creatures, entirely comfortable with the presence of humans as they make their way along the coast. If you can swim, you can swim with the whale sharks.

Spotter Planes

Spotter planes operated by tour operators ensure that you know exactly where the whale sharks will be, getting you to the action quickly and efficiently.

Why Ningaloo Reef?

The seasonal aggregation of Whale Sharks in the Ningaloo Marine Park is linked with an increase in the productivity of the ocean around the time of the mass coral spawning in March/April each year. Ningaloo Reef is one of the few places in the world where Whale Sharks appear regularly in numbers.

The Ningaloo Coast is a World Heritage Site located in the north west coastal region of Western Australia. The 705,015-hectare (1,742,130-acre) heritage-listed area is located approximately 1,200 kilometres (750 mi) north of Perth, along the East Indian Ocean. The distinctive Ningaloo Reef that fringes the Ningaloo Coast is 260 kilometres (160 mi) long and is Australia’s largest fringing coral reef and the only large reef positioned very close to a landmass. The Muiron Islands and Cape Farquhar are within this coastal zone.
The coast and reef draw their name from the Australian Aboriginal Wajarri language word ningaloo meaning “promontory”, “deepwater”, or “high land jutting into the sea”. The Yamatji peoples of the Baiyungu and Yinigudura clans have inhabited the area for over 30,000 years.

Unique Place

Ningaloo Reef is in Australia and it is one of the most unique places to visit in Australia. Each year tourists visit Ningaloo Reef in Australia to swim and snorkel with whale sharks and see the amazing variety of marine life. Ningaloo Reef is the only place in Australia where whale sharks are found in large numbers at predictable times and are easily accessible to snorkelers.

Best Times to Come

A whale shark tour between late May and August often involves whale shark and manta ray swimming, watching the stunning surface displays of the humpback whales and then being surrounded by whale song as you snorkel the Ningaloo Reef too.

When and Where Do Whale Shark Tours Operate?

Join a whale shark watching or snorkeling tour from Exmouth or Coral Bay and experience the ultimate Whale Shark diving experience. Every year, between mid-March and mid-July, these gentle giants of the ocean congregate in the Ningaloo Marine Park following the mass spawning of coral.

Although massive, whale sharks are docile fish and sometimes allow swimmers to hitch a ride.
