All You Need to Know

Covering a distance of nearly 4500 kilometers the journey from Darwin to Perth is sure going to be a mighty long one. However, if adventure and fun is what you are going for, this trip will most definitely deliver. All the way from the Northern territory to the heart of Western Australia, a trip from Darwin to Perth will take you through the best of what Western Australia has to offer. If planned right you are sure going to love every minute of it.

Overview of Your Journey

Western Australia is rugged and rural but that’s where most of its beauty lies. Unspoiled and raw, you can discover Australia in its most authentic and natural form. Travelers embarking on this road trip are usually amazed at how much there is to see and how much more there is to learn. You will need a couple of days to do justice to the treasures you will come across enroute and that’s where the heart of all your planning lies.

Go Prepared

From clothes to shoes to camera, make sure you pack everything you will need both for your journey as well as your destination; both of which are most likely to be equally exciting. Stay comfortable. Western Australia is not as developed as the Eastern side of this country so you need to expect a little bit of roughing out here and there. Protect yourself adequately from the sun for the heat can get a bit harsh on this side of the country. Pack first aid and bring lots of snacks and of course music for the road.

Explore Edith Falls

The first stop you are likely to encounter on your bus trip is Edith Falls. Located in Katherine George National Park, this is definitely one place that will take your breath away. Take that 3km walk to the upper pools and soak in the beauty. You will not be witnessing too many waterfalls along the way so make the most out of this one.

Try Bush Camping

A lot of younger travelers prefer adding bush camping into the agenda. Whether you are an outback drover or a city slicker if you have adventure in your blood you will love discovering the wild in its most raw and unspoiled form.

Victoria River Valley

For those who love water bodies of all sorts there are quite a bit of sparkling spots along your way to Perth. Victoria River is very popular mainly because in addition to the beauty of this river you also find here some interesting hiking trails where you can encounter a myriad of wild life. To add a little bit of excitement you also get a couple of freshwater crodiles so better watch out!

Kununurra

A very popular stop in the route from Darwin to Perth, this is yet another one of nature’s masterpieces. The scenery here is literally out of this world and there is plenty to do here like visiting the Mirima National Park, Lake Kununurra and the Home Valley Station. Of course you can’t do it all in the midst of your journey so you need to pick your favorite places and explore. While you cross this enchanting city stop and take as many pictures as you like

Broome

If you want to do a little city exploring on your way to Perth, Broome is an ideal stop. There are a number of interesting activities you could experience here and if you have the time it is worth exploring as many places as you can. From exciting hovercraft adventures, whale watching tours to checking out a collection of world class pearls, there is so much you can do here. There is also the spectacular Nature Falls and the fascinating natural phenomena called stair case to the moon effect which is definitely worth checking out.

Karijini National Park

From Fortescue Falls, to the majestic pool to Dales Gorge and so much more this park is yet another one of those must visit places from Darwin to Perth. You can swim in the cool refreshing pool and hike and discover some of the most amazing flora and fauna. The experience as a whole is refreshing. To enjoy a little coastal bliss while you are here, head over to Exmouth. The Exmouth Bay really is something else.

Coral Bay

If Exmouth got you excited, imagine what Coral Bay would do! A fantastic place for snorkeling and boat rides this is yet another one of those must not miss spots on your way to Perth. It may take a bit of your time soaking up all the beauty both in and out of the waters but it most certainly is worth your while.

Shell Beach

This is yet another major highlight in Coral Bay and is an absolute must visit. The Shell Beach is literally full of shells so much so that instead of sand you actually get shells lining the coast! As intriguing as it is to explore, you just need to make sure you keep your shoes on when walking on top of them.

Monkey Mia

From Coral Bay drive up to Monkey Mia to continue the rest of your adventure. Monkey Mia is a great spot to interact with sea life. Visitors mainly come for the dolphins for the ones found in Monkey Mia seem exceptionally friendly. You can feed them and if you are lucky you may even be able to touch them. For 40 years dolphins have been visiting Monkey Mia earning this area recognition as a World Heritage Area. In fact, it is also one of the only places in the world for reliable dolphin interactions.

Kalbarri

Next on your agenda should be Kalbarri. Now this is yet another scenic masterpiece that is adorned with a number of beautiful inland gorges the most common of which are the Natures Window and the Murchinson Gorge. Take your time, explore, find your favorite places and soak in the beauty for each of these spots is absolutely picturesque.

Coastal Bush Camp

Since Kalbarri is vast and an absolutely heavenly stretch of land there are so many tranquil spots where you can camp out for the night. The Coastal Bush Camp is a particular favorite for not only do you get to literally sleep under the stars you also get to have the sound of the crashing waves for a lullaby. It does not get more intimate with nature than this.

Bigurda Trail and Eagle Gorge

If you opted for spending the night out at the Kalbarri National Park, rise early and bask in the beauty of the sunrise. Next, head over to the Bigurda Trail and the Eagle Gorge. Lots of walking and hiking but here again you will witness some of the most mind-blowing scenery.

Nambung National Park

Your last stop before Perth will most likely be the Nambung National Park. The Park is at a 200km distance from Perth and is well known for having a couple of unique natural attractions. You can start by visiting the picturesque Lake Thetis and Hangover Bay and if you are keen on exploring flora and fauna, there is quite a collection here. Out of the 176 animal species that call this park their home you get creatures like the dingo, honey possum and the red fox.

The Pinnacles Desert

Among all the attractions in the Nambung National Park it is probably the Pinnacles Desert that takes the cake. One of a kind, this unique stretch of land has golden limestone outcrops protruding randomly from the earth. Some of these limestone pillars are so tall that they reach heights up to 4 meters. The entire picture is post card perfect and if you want to capture those unique photographs with fantastic lighting, there is nothing standing in your way at the Pinnacles desert.
