Aptly named because of the Penguins who call this island their home, Penguin Island is a 45 minute drive from Perth. The island hosts the biggest colony of Penguins in Western Australia. These are also the smallest species of penguins in the world. There are more than 1000 penguins roaming about this island. Nevertheless, it is not as easy as you think to spot one when you visit. The fairy penguins, the smallest breed of penguins, are very shy creatures and hence it is hard to see them in the wild. Mostly they spend the whole day in the water and return to the island only once night has fallen. Therefore, in order to actually see some penguins, you can visit the Discovery Centre. This is a great opportunity to observe how the rangers and the birds interact with each other. These shy creatures will only allow feedings from their own carer. However, visitors can come see them get fed at the allocated times.

What Is the Best Time to Visit the Penguin Island
From September 15th through early June (except on December 25th), visitors to Penguin Island may enjoy the island on a daily basis. However, the island is off-limits to the public from early June to mid-September due to the nesting season.
