The Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) establishes a minimum wage requirement for foreign workers in Australia who are sponsored for work visas (subclasses 482, 494) through programmes like the Temporary Skill Shortage or Regional Sponsored Migration Schemes.
TSMIT Increase and Student Visa Working Hours Change The TSMIT will rise to $70,000 as of July 1. Since the TSMIT was locked at $53,900 a decade ago, this is the first rise. For all new nomination applications, this level must be met. Or, alternatively, the Australian market pay rate, whichever is higher.

It is crucial to clarify that this change will not apply in the following cases:
- Nominations submitted before July 1, 2023
- Nominations accepted after July 1, 2023
- Any future visa applications submitted after July 1, 2023, that already contain a submitted or approved nomination
Industries with historical average wages below this criteria and those planning to nominate new foreign employees shortly or re-nominate current workers whose sponsored visas are about to expire would likely be affected.
Student visa working hours change
Students on subclass 500 visas have been able to work an unrestricted number of hours to assist the economy during most of the epidemic. The maximum number of hours that holders of student visas may work in a fortnight will once again be capped beginning on July 1, 2023.
This was formerly 40 hours every two weeks, but it has now been increased to 48 hours.
TSMIT Increase and Student Visa Working Hours Change: Working unrestricted hours
Student visa holders may work unrestricted hours in the elderly care industry as of now, and they will be able to do so until December 31, 2023.
Depending on their course, certain holders of student visas who are pursuing higher-level degrees, such as master’s or doctoral degrees, may continue to work an unrestricted number of hours.
Aged Care Labour Agreement
Several industry-specific labour agreements have been established by the Department of Home Affairs. And this is to address the shortage of qualified and semi-skilled employees in industries that cannot access these individuals via more conventional channels, such as wage and English language waivers.
The most recent revision of the Aged Care Labour Agreement allows for the sponsorship of the following jobs within the industry:
- Personal Care Assistant
- Aged or disabled carer
- Nursing Support Worker
